Vis-à-Vis is a one-hour documentary music performance by Ensemble Adapter. On an intimate stage, Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir and Matthias Engler breathe new life into the historic collaborative composition Vis-à-Vis through a seamless blend of music, performance, text, and video. Premiered in San Diego in 1986, the piece had since faded into obscurity. It was originally conceived by the legendary American performance duo [THE], who invited composers John Cage and Toru Takemitsu to join them in creating a groundbreaking full-length work. The composition took shape through a remarkable process of material exchange by mail, linking New York (Cage), San Diego (THE), and Tokyo (Takemitsu). This intricate collaboration allowed the three parties to shape the piece as equal co-authors. Through meticulous research, Ensemble Adapter has succeeded in unraveling and contextualizing the creative efforts that once brought this visionary project to life. At the heart of this rediscovery lies the pioneering spirit of [THE], whose innovative approach to experimental music theater proved far ahead of its time. Vis-à-Vis not only celebrates their artistic legacy but also poses poignant questions about authorship and artistic community—issues that resonate more urgently than ever within today’s political and cultural landscape.
